Ski resorts trail maps: Bolivia

Chacaltaya

The highest ski area in the world. The most equatorial ski area in the world. The oldest ski lift in South America. The fastest surface lift in the world. The northernmost ski area in South America. The only ski area in South America with a season that corresponds to that of North America. The most difficult lift to load in the world. Chacaltaya ski resort is located just 18 miles from Bolivia"s capital, La Paz. Skiing at Chacaltaya ski resort is centred on one main run and one chairlift. Chacaltaya operates only on weekends from November to March. The slopes run between 17,000 and 17,700 ft (5200 to 5400 m) and are for skiers who are already acclimatized to the altitude. The downhill piste itself is not too difficult for intermediate skiers. But times are hard for the world"s highest ski resort, a dizzy 5,300 metres above sea level. Not even Chacaltaya"s lofty heights can save it from the ravages of climate change, its glacier is melting so fast synthetic snow is seen as the only way to save it.
